Scar formation is a natural part of the healing process. Whether a scar is a result of trauma, surgery, acne, or some other type of injury, it can be an unsightly, painful and physically limiting process. Visible scars can act as a constant reminder of an injury or event you would like to forget, or they can simply be distracting from what you want others to see when they look at you. Fortunately, there are answers to unwanted scars

Over the past decade, surgical correction, lasers and other devices have revolutionized the way we treat scars. Surgical, traumatic, hypertrophic (thick and red), hypopigmented (white), hyperpigmented (brown), burn, and acne scars may all benefit from treatment. Dr. Burt Steffes is an expert in the field of scar revision. He uses specific laesr, surgical, and traditional techniques to dramatically fade and reduce the appearance of scars.

After a thorough consultation and evaluation of your scar, we can begin working on a treatment plan to help correct discoloration, improve texture, and flatten raised areas. The specific therapy will vary depending on the type, size, and location of your scar. The number of treatments required, recovery time and anticipated results are all discussed during the in-depth consultation. Although small scars may require one or two treatment sessions, more complex scars will require a series of treatments for the best overall results.

Birthmarks are common skin conditions. The most common birthmarks are typically red or tan and small in size. For many people, their birthmark is inconsequential. However, for some, a birthmark can be large or be highly visible.

At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we can effectively treat both vascular and pigmented birthmarks, so you can see your skin as you imagine it. Our practice is equipped with the several different lasers and light-based treatments specifically chosen for effectiveness in the treatment of a variety of birthmarks including port-wine stains, Café Au Lait macules and others.

During the consultation, our physicians will thoroughly discuss the history of your birthmark and carefully assess the area to determine the best course of treatment.

Facial redness is a very common skin complaint with numerous causes including sun damage, rosacea, medications, and genetics. These insults can cause capillaries, the smallest blood vessels on the face, to become enlarged. Over time, a large number of these “broken” capillaries can lead to a persistently red face. Though broken capillaries, also called spider veins or telangiectasia, do not pose any health risks, they can cause the skin to look mottled, blotchy and aged.

At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we can improve the appearance of broken capillaries with vascular laser and light-based treatments. By gently heating the capillaries during treatment, facial redness is reduced over a series of treatments with minimal recovery time. The result is a more radiant, even complexion without the reddness.

Correction of unwanted blood vessels is accomplished using electrosurgery, intense pulsed light and lasers at Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians.

There is nothing quite like a warm, sunny day to lift the spirit, especially after a long cold winter. Unfortunately, excessive sun exposure is not kind to the skin. Over time, sun damage causes fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, large pores, rough skin, broken capillaries, and, worst of all, skin cancer.

At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we take sun damage and skin cancer very seriously. It is important to us that our patients are checked for skin cancer before a treatment plan is created that will improve the appearance of your skin. With every new consultation, our dermatologists offer a complimentary skin cancer screening to check for any signs of skin cancer. We teach our patients how to perform a skin self-examination so they can detect the early signs of skin cancer. Since most skin cancers are curable when diagnosed and treated in the earliest stages, we want our patients to identify skin cancer as early as possible. Furthermore, we encourage our patients to practice “safe sun” behaviors through the use of sunscreen, hats, sun protective clothing and smart sun choices.

Once we confirm your skin is healthy, our dermatologists carefully evaluate the skin to determine the best treatment approach based your individual needs and skin type. The sun damages the skin in multiple ways, so the best results are often obtained by the skillful blending of several treatments and techniques. Our highly experienced physicians will often combine treatments and technology on the same visit to maximize results while minimizing recovery time, helping to achieve the refreshed, glowing and vibrant appearance you desire. Therapy options for irregular freckling and discolorations at Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians include chemical peels, intense pulsed light and fractionated laser resurfacing.

Submental fullness, otherwise known as a “double chin,” is a common concern among both men and women, but often goes untreated because, until recently, the only option for improvement was surgery.

Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians offers two non-surgical alternatives for getting rid of unwanted neck fat that causes double chins:

  • CoolMini
  • Kybella®

The fat-freezing CoolSculpting® system has an FDA-approved miniature applicator, CoolMini, specifically created to remove fat from the neck and help you say goodbye to your double chin. Kybella is the first FDA-approved injectable treatment to contour and improves the appearance of submental fullness without surgery. Both treatments are highly effective and will significantly improve the appearance of your neck after several treatments.

Hereditary-pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss. It is not a disease, but a natural condition caused by acombination of genetics, hormone levels, and the aging process.  Although commonly thought of as a problem mostly in men, it is also prevalent in women. In fact, more than 1 in 4 women will experience hereditary hair thinning.

There are surgical and non-surgical steps you can take to restore thicker, more beautiful hair. Not everyone will respond to a single type of treatment, therefore a combination approach to thinning hair is often recommended. Since hereditary-pattern hair loss is an ongoing process, maintenance of therapy is required to sustain results.

Minoxidil (Rogaine): has been clinically proven to reinvigorate thinning hair follicles.  When used daily, this over-the-counter topical product can help prevent miniaturization of the hair follicles, resulting in fuller, thicker hair.

Hair Supplements: Although once thought to deliver questionable results, today’s most advanced hair supplements have clinically tested ingredients to combat the underlying causes of thinning hair. Taken daily, less hair shedding is typically seen after 2-3 months.  However, not all hair supplements are the same and some contain fish-derived proteins so be sure to discuss recommendations and allergies with your dermatologist.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) harnesses the power of the body’s natural restorative potential to add fullness and volume to thinning hair. Platelets in the blood contain growth factors that can energize cellular activity within the hair follicle to promote the proliferation of thicker, healthier-looking hair. Best performed in a series of treatments, PRP injections typically produce noticeable results in 2-3 months.

ARTAS® robotic hair transplant: The pinnacle of hair restoration techniques, ARTAS® robotic hair transplantation is the most precise, accurate, and reproducible method of hair transplantation available. Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians is proud to be Wisconsins exclusive provider of the most effective hair transplant method. Dr Steffes’s skills in hairline design combined with the precision of the robot results in confidence inspiring hair restoration. Your path to a more confident self starts with a thorough consultation with Dr. Steffes to determine the cause of your hair loss and discuss the most appropriate treatment option that meets your specific needs and desires. If hair transplantation is the best option for you, our expert team will guide you through the process, delivering natural looking, confidence inspiring results.

With time, the skin begins to show the combined effects of sun exposure, gravity, repeated facial expressions and age-related volume loss in the face. As a result, facial lines and wrinkles develop.

At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we take a comprehensive approach to aging skin. During your consultation, Dr. Steffes will carefully listen to your concerns and analyze your skin, facial structure and anatomy to determine the best treatment plan for you. Our treatments are non-surgical and designed to have you back to your busy schedule with minimal downtime and a natural, refreshed appearance. Using expertise and artistry, Dr. Steffes combines the most advanced non-invasive, anti-aging treatments to deliver results that are natural, balanced, and customized to each patient. Our goal is to help every patient look as vibrant and radiant as they feel on the inside.

Dr Steffes utilizes neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport), dermal fillers (Juviderm, Restylane, Voluma, Belotero, etc), chemical peels, intense pulsed light, micro needling, and fractionated laser resurfacing to deliver natural looking, radiant results.

Melasma is a complex and challenging condition. It is caused by an interaction between hormones and uv light exposure. Its presence causes people to feel less confident, less attractive, and less youthful. At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, Dr. Steffes uses his expertise to combine therapies to effectively manage melasma. With appropriate sun protection, topical therapy, chemical peels, oral medication, and laser treatments, Dr. Steffes helps you achieve more youthful results. Most patients will need ongoing therapy to help maintain their improvement and Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians has the knowledge and products to help you sustain your improvement.

Whether it is on your face, arms, hips, abdomen, flanks, back, or thighs, many of us struggle with specific areas of unwanted fat. These localized areas of persistent fat are resistant to changes in diet and exercise, making it difficult to stay motivated with your exercise routine. In the past, surgical liposuction was the only way to remove unwanted body fat. However, we now have several non-invasive, non-surgical body contouring options that get rid of unwanted fat for good; without downtime. Our non-surgical body contouring options are designed to remove problem fat with little to no recovery time. All treatments are performed in the privacy of our body contouring suite while our staff attends to every detail to ensure a comfortable experience. At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we make it simple to see a slimmer you.

For your body transformation at Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians we use Coolsculpting and Kybella to non-non-surgically shape your body.

It can be very difficult to feel comfortable and confident in certain clothing if you are constantly worried about the appearance of visible veins on your legs. Spider veins are common problems faced by both men and women. Fortunately, spider veins respond well to a variety of treatment options.

At Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians, we perform sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments to improve the physical appearance of your skin and to give you the confidence you deserve–no matter what you’re wearing.

During the vein treatment consultation, our experienced physicians will evaluate the size, shape, color, and location of the leg veins to develop a treatment plan that is specific to your needs. Sclerotherapy is performed using a dilute solution gently injected into the leg veins to shrink and close them over time. A series of treatments may be required for the best response. Laser leg vein treatment may be suggested for the treatment of very small spider veins or telangiectasia. In certain situations, the best results are obtained from a combination of the two techniques.

Although many patients see an immediate difference, it can take several weeks to see the final results of our vein treatment. Larger or more resistant veins may require additional sessions for the best outcome. The experienced physicians at Dermatology and Cosmetic Physicians are experts in both sclerotherapy and laser leg vein treatments, so a variety of leg veins can be addressed at a single visit.
